Gustave Loiseau, plutôt peintre de paysages et de bords de Seine, ne s'est aventuré dans la représentation de la Nature Morte qu'à partir de 1921, date à laquelle il céda à regrets à la Galerie Durand-Ruel, une toile de fleurs que lui avait offert Gauguin. Loiseau pris soin de réaliser une copie du tableau et cette toile marqua le début d'une série de Natures Mortes que l'artiste exécuta pendant les années à venir et où se décèle presque toujours l'influence de son ami et maître.
Probablement acheté à l'artiste par la Galerie Durand-Ruel & Georges Petit, Paris

Gustave Loiseau, more of a painter of landscapes especially the banks of the Seine, did not venture into the representation of Still Life until 1921, the date on which he regretfully gave up a canvas of flowers to the Durand-Ruel Gallery, that Gauguin had given him.
Loiseau took care to make a copy of the painting and this canvas marked the beginning of a series of Still Lifes that the artist executed during the years to come and where the influence of his friend and master is almost always detected.
